Alabama’s Cheyenne Knight and Kristen Gillman Candidates for Women’s Golf Coaches Association Honors...

on 5/18/2017

Crimson Tide Women's Golf:

Alabama sophomore Cheyenne Knight and freshman Kristen Gillman are among the candidates for two of the top awards in college golf, the Women's Golf Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

The 2016 WGCA Freshman of the Year, Knight is one of five golfers on the WGCA's Player of the Year watch list this season.

The Aledo, Texas, native has already earned SEC Player of the Year and First Team All-SEC honors this season and enters the NCAA Championships ranked third in both the Golfstat and Golfweek rankings.

She leads Alabama in scoring average (70.39) and score vs. par (-1.29) and is tied for the team lead in rounds in the 60s with 10 and top-five finishes with five.

Knight finished under par in seven of 10 outings this season and posted eight top-10 finishes in 10 tournaments played in 2016-17 along with tournament wins at the Mason Rudolph Championship and Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

Gillman is one of three golfes on the WGCA's Freshman of the Year watch list. She was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and a first team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman selection earlier this season. She is ranked eighth in the latest Golfstat rankings and sixth in the most recent Golfweek rankings.

The Austin, Texas, native leads the Tide in rounds of par or better with 20 in 28 rounds played in 2016-17 and is tied for the team lead in top five finishes with five.

She has finished in the top 25 in all 10 outings this season, in the top 10 seven times, in the top five five times and has finished under par in six of 10 outings this season.

She won her first collegiate tournament at the Bryan National Collegiate in April.

Knight, Gillman and the rest of the Crimson Tide will play in the 2017 NCAA Women's Golf Championships May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
