Nick & Terry Saban Urge Alabama legislators to support autism therapy bill...

on Saturday, March 11, 2017

      Nick & Terry Saban:

Nick Saban and his wife Terry sent a letter Monday to the Alabama Legislature, urging its members to support HB 284, the Autism Insurance Reform Bill.

"Forty-five US states have laws requiring health insurance coverage for autism therapies," they wrote in the letter. "We are asking you to assist these families to get the help they need for their children and loved ones."

About 50,000 families in Alabama are affected by autism, a developmental disorder that impairs a person's ability to communicate and interact. The gold standard for autism therapy is Applied Behavioral Analyisis, or ABA, and there has been a dramatic increase in its use over the past decade, according to Autism Speaks, an advocacy organization.

In people with autism, ABA fosters skills like looking, listening and imitating, as well as basic life skills like reading and interacting appropriately with others.

But ABA is expensive. The highly specialized sessions can cost $50-$100 an hour or more, and most doctors recommend 10-40 hours per week, depending on the severity of the disorder.
