Alabama Men’s Tennis Scheduled to Participate in ITA Kick-Off Weekend Event...

on 1/26/2017

Crimson Tide Men's Tennis:

The Alabama men's tennis team is scheduled to compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament, which is held on the campus of Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Jan. 27-29. The Crimson Tide (2-1) will take on Washington on Friday, Jan. 27 at 8 a.m. CT, followed by matches against fifth-ranked Georgia or Purdue on Saturday.

Last time out, Alabama lost a 4-0 decision to the 21st-ranked Michigan Wolverines in the inaugural 2017 College MatchDay series at the United States Tennis Association National Campus, in Orlando, Fla.

Washington comes into the three-day event with an overall undefeated record at 4-0. Last weekend, the Huskies defeated Utah State, 6-1, before blanking Gonzaga in a 7-0 decision. Washington has one singles player nationally-ranked, No. 60 Mitch Stewart. Friday's match marks the second contest between the two schools, as Washington holds a 1-0 series lead. The last time the two programs squared off was in the 2008 season, when the Huskies defeated the Tide in a 4-2 decision.

The last time Alabama competed in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event was in the 2015 season, when the Tide lost to 38th-ranked Virginia Tech, 4-1, before falling to Oregon in a 4-0 decision in the consolation match.

Alabama's tandem of sophomores Mazen Osama and Spencer Richey entered the 2017 spring season nationally ranked No. 32 in doubles play, while Osama and freshman Thibault Cancel began the campaign ranked No. 63 and No. 78 in singles play, respectively, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Jan. 4.

The team that wins both matches on the weekend will qualify for the 2017 ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships, which is held in Charlottesville, Va., from Feb. 17-20.
